WoW Retail Gold: how this market works
Retail WoW in the Midnight expansion: orders run to millions of gold, and per thousand it is the cheapest gold of any version. Every one of the 77 realms has live offers above, and Area 52 is the cheapest today. Each rate is set by the seller who listed it.
There is a lot of gold in retail: one week of Mythic+ can earn more than a vanilla character makes in a month. That keeps each thousand cheap; what adds up is how many thousands people need.
Gold never crosses between WoW versions. Within retail, though, the Warband Bank moves it between your own characters on any realm and on either faction in your region, so the realm you receive it on matters for the price, not for where the gold can go afterwards. Choose the realm, and each offer shows its full price before you continue.
Typical purchases
- An auction-house BoE — frequently 500,000g or more
- Crafting order with sparks — 200,000–800,000g for the full order
- AH mounts and transmog — priced by that day's market
What eats your gold in Midnight
Two of the biggest gold drains in the history of WoW arrived with Midnight. Neither one makes your character stronger, and that is exactly why neither has a natural point where you are done paying.
- Your house: plot and decorPlot 1,000g; furnishing 11,000g to 200,000g
- Getting a plot is the cheap part. You pay 1,000g at the neighborhood sign, nobody bids against you, there is no upkeep, and taking a break from the game doesn't cost you the plot. Decor is where your gold goes. A basic setup from vendor furniture comes to about 10,000g and takes a weekend. A house worth inviting people to costs between 50,000 and 100,000g and takes two to four weeks, and serious collectors go past 200,000g, practically living on the auction house. You can also buy decor with real money through Hearthsteel, sold at 100 to the dollar, which gives you a yardstick for its value in gold.
- Outfit slots for transmogTwenty slots 162,650g; all fifty 2,012,650g
- In Midnight a transmog sits on the gear slot rather than on the item, so equipping a new piece keeps the look you chose and you stop paying to apply it again. The cost moved to outfits instead. You start with two outfit slots free. Getting to twenty costs 162,650g in total, and opening every one of the fifty comes to 2,012,650g. Slots belong to your whole Warband, so one payment covers every character on the account, and switching between saved outfits costs nothing after that.
- Upgrading gearDawncrests and gold at each rank
- Valorstones no longer exist. Each upgrade rank now takes Dawncrests along with a gold fee, on every track from Adventurer and Veteran through Champion, Hero and Myth. On one character you barely notice it. Across a Warband, the gold half multiplies by the number of alts you actually play.
- Crafted gear via ordersSix figures a slot early in a season
- A commissioned piece costs you three ways: the crafter's fee, the rare reagents you supply or buy, and a spark, which you only get a limited number of. Early in a season, when everyone is trying to fill the same slots, the market can push a single commission past what you'd earn in an ordinary week.
- Flasks, enchants and gemsWeekly, for each character
- If you push keys or progress a raid tier, gems, enchants, flasks, potions and food are a bill that arrives every week. It grows with how many characters you play seriously, not with how skilled you are.
- Repair billsThe cost nobody counts
- Every wipe damages all the gear you have on, and a progression night can mean dozens of them. On a bad night, repairs alone reach thousands of gold before a single boss goes down.
What retail players buy gold for
Pushing Mythic+ keys
A week of keys costs flasks, potions, food, enchants, gems and crafted gear. Getting better doesn't make it cheaper: higher keys burn more consumables and break more gear. Gear up two or three characters and you pay all of it two or three times.
Progressing a raid tier
Wiping is the work. Twenty pulls on a boss that never dies still leave you with a full repair bill and every consumable you used getting there. A guild that runs out of gold stops flasking, and a guild that stops flasking stops killing bosses.
Rated PvP seasons
Each season starts the gear cycle over. Enchants, gems, upgrades and respecs pile up as it goes, and switching specs means paying for much of it twice, since a different build wants different stats and often a whole different set.
Decorating a house
Everything above has a cap somewhere. Housing doesn't. There is always one more piece of decor, one more upgrade, one more room to fill. It is the first WoW system built to soak up gold without limit, and players are feeding it exactly that.
Top-end crafting
At the high end of a profession, what holds you back is rare materials and costly recipes, not skill points. For most crafters the limit is gold, not time.

How this storefront works
Prices from the catalog
Every rate and every starting price is read from the sellers' catalogs when the site is built. None of them is typed in by hand.
Nothing listed, nothing shown
When no seller offers a realm or a service, the page says not on sale right now instead of showing a number.
The seller before you click
Every gold offer names its seller, the stock behind it and the delivery time before you continue.
Checkout with the seller
The order is placed and paid on the seller's own site, and the gold or the service goes to your character in game.
Questions and answers
What does WoW Retail Gold cost right now?
One rate covers every realm with offers in this version, so no realm is cheaper than another. The figure sits on every offer above, set by the seller who posted it.
Where is Retail gold cheapest?
Nowhere in particular, because one rate covers every realm. And since the Warband Bank moves gold between your own characters across realms and factions in your region, the realm you receive it on is mostly a matter of convenience.
Is Midnight gold just retail gold?
Yes. Midnight is the expansion the live game runs today, so gold on a Midnight character is retail gold, whichever name a seller puts on it.
We call it retail to set it apart from Classic, where the gold really is a separate currency that cannot cross over. If you play the current game on a live realm, this page is the right one.
Can Retail — Midnight gold be moved to another WoW version?
No. Each version runs its own economy with its own characters, and nothing carries Retail — Midnight gold out of it: not a transfer, not a token, not a trade.
What do I need to give the seller?
The character that receives the gold, its realm and its faction, plus an email for the receipt. Gold is delivered to a character, so nothing beyond that is needed.
How is WoW gold delivered?
By in-game mail or in a face-to-face trade, whichever the offer lists. Larger amounts are often split into several hand-offs, and each offer shows its delivery time before you continue.
What if the gold does not arrive in the time shown?
Write to support with the order number. The refund page explains how missed and partial deliveries are handled.
